On Saturday, November 15th, Black River Presbyterian Church hosted a pig picking and yard sale for our extended community. We put the word out in Atkinson and Ivanhoe and places in between. The pig picking was free but donations were accepted if people so desired. The yard sale was multi-family, with many of the church members contributing items they no longer needed or wanted. The purpose of the event was to experience fellowship with our neighbors. The goal was to add to the Luther Brown Memorial Fund, which benefits those in our community with special needs.
The day was clear but cold. Even so, we sold up to 1/2 of the yard sale items and served between 75 and 100 people at the pig picking. The crowd was eclectic. We had local hunters, fellow presbyterians and members from other denominations in the area. We even had folks from Wilmington.
All in all, the event was more successful than we anticipated. We fed and enjoyed fellowship with our neighbors, and raised over $1600.00 for our special needs fund.
Many of our congregation pitched in to help make the event a success. We were all tired, but happy at the event's end. And all of the items from the yard sale that did not sell were donated to the Christian Services resale shop in Burgaw.
And we are talking about making it an annual event.
