November Trash Pickup

1/7/2016

Our last quarter trash pickup  for 2015 on Ivanhoe Road took place in November.  We filled 6 bags of general trash and 6 bags of recyclable material.  This is four bags more than the other 3 pickups in 2015.

Our increase in trash seems to coincide with deer hunting season.  We would respectfully request that all deer hunters endeavor to keep our roadsides clean during the  season.  Perhaps our hunters could help out by picking up any trash that they see while they are waiting to bag their deer.

Five years and counting

Black River celebrated it's fifth year as an earth care certified church in June.  We are still finding ways to celebrate the gift of God's earth.  This year we started an organic community garden in the field in front of the church.  And we continue our adopt a highway cleanup every quarter.  This has to be considered a labor of love, especially in the dog days of summer and the dead of winter.

We are also planning to present a poster highlighting our earth care certification at the E3 conference hosted by the Coastal Carolina Presbytery, which is scheduled for September of this year.

On May the 10th, the green team participated in the 2014 Spring Sweep in the Adopt-a-Highway program.  For 3 hours, braving heat, insects and possible snakes, we picked up litter along Ivanhoe Road.
Part of the spring sweep is the unusual litter contest.  Here are the unique things we found on this outing.

On May the 6th, the green team visited the Burgaw library.  Not to read books but to plant flowers.  Under the auspices of Marguerite Culbreth and Mike Taylor, we planted new flowers in the bed in front of the library.

    About Us

God gave us only one earth.

And an edict to care for it.

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it - Gen 2:15

So in 2011, the congregation of Black River Presbyterian Church decided to go green.

This is some of what we do.
