Amid somewhat soggy conditions, Black River Presbyterian Church hosted it's annual Homecoming event. Despite the rain, a jolly time was had by the participants.
The service was conducted by our Moderator, Paul Layton. Our guest speaker was Reverend Doctor Samuel Murrell, Professor of Philosophy and Religion at University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a member of the Presbytery’s Commission on the Minister (COM). Rev. Murrell spoke of the homecoming of Jesus, when he was not welcome in his own home town. He reminded us of how we sometime, today, neglect to welcome Jesus and his teachings in our own lives. It was a very thought-provoking sermon.
The piano and organ music was provided by Barbara Gurganious Shaltz. Special music was provided by Lynn Auman, violinist and her son Chad Hammer on the cello.
They are from Shallotte Presbyterian Church.
Pipe Major Andy Simpson and his wife Ann provided us with stirring bagpipe music.
Dinner on the grounds was a challenge due to the rain, but our guests made do. The food, as always was a delight. Special thanks to Minnie Robinson and Minnie Harvey, who helped with the meal service.
After the dinner, and despite the rain, we had a small tree planting service to replace the large oak tree in front of the church. That venerable tree finally succumbed to a wind storm earlier this year. We have replaced it with a new, young live oak tree.
